By utilizing available health promotion theories and models, nurses can positively affect patient outcomes by promoting behavioral changes to improve patient health and wellness (Whitney, 2018). Behavior change model, which involves progress through change stages. These stages include pre-contemplation; contemplation; preparation; action; maintenance; and termination (Amodio & Swencionis, 2018). The initial stage is pre-contemplation during which a person does not have any intention to take any action in the near future. The next stage is contemplation during which a person intends to initiate the healthy behavior in the near future. The third stage is preparation in which a person is ready to take the necessary action within a reasonable timeline. Here, the person starts taking small steps towards changing their behavior. During the fourth stage, action, a person will have recently changed his/her behavior and have the intention to maintain the good behavior going forward. The fifth stage is maintenance which simply involves a person sustaining his/her behavior change for a relatively long time and has the intention to maintain it going forward. The final stage is termination during which a person does not have the desire to return to his/her unhealthy behaviors. Here, the person is sure that he/she will not relapse. The barriers that affects the process is the patiens reddiness and the ability to learn.The barriers can be eliminated by early preparation of the patients and giving little information one at a time. During the contemplation stage, individuals begin to consider making a healthy behavior change in the near future. They acknowledge the need for change but may still have doubts or uncertainties about taking action.

The preparation stage is where individuals are ready to take action within a reasonable timeframe. They start taking small steps towards changing their behavior and may seek resources or support to help them in this process. Next is the action stage, in which individuals have recently changed their behavior and have the intention to maintain the new behavior going forward. This stage requires dedication and effort to overcome barriers and sustain the behavior change.

The maintenance stage involves individuals sustaining their behavior change for a relatively long period and having the intention to maintain it going forward. This stage is critical as it helps prevent relapse and ensures long-term adherence to the healthy behavior. The final stage is termination, where individuals do not have the desire to return to their unhealthy behaviors. They have reached a point where they are confident in their ability to maintain the behavior change without the risk of relapse.

Although the behavior change model provides a framework for understanding the stages of behavior change, it is important to acknowledge the barriers that can affect this process. One significant barrier is the readiness of the patient to change. If individuals are not motivated or do not perceive the need for change, it can be challenging to initiate and sustain behavior change. Additionally, the ability to learn and acquire new knowledge or skills can also be a barrier. If individuals lack the necessary resources or support to learn and adopt new behaviors, it can hinder their progress through the stages of behavior change.

To address these barriers and promote successful behavior change, early preparation of patients is crucial. Providing education and information about the benefits of the desired behavior change can help individuals recognize the need for change and build motivation. Breaking down the information into smaller, manageable pieces and delivering it gradually can facilitate learning and prevent overwhelming individuals with too much information at once.
