As a future advanced practice nurse, it is important that you are able to connect your classroom experience to your practicum experience. By applying the concepts you study in the classroom to clinical settings, you enhance your professional competency. Each week, you complete an Assignment that prompts you to reflect on your practicum experiences and relate them to the material presented in the classroom. This week, you begin documenting your practicum experiences in your Practicum Journal. In preparation for this course’s practicum experience, address the following in your Practicum Journal: · Select one nursing theory and one counseling theory to best guide your practice in psychotherapy. · Explain why you selected these theories. Support your approach with evidence- based literature. · Develop at least three goals and at least three objectives for the practicum experience in this course. · Create a timeline of practicum activities based on your practicum requirements. In the field of advanced practice nursing, it is crucial to utilize both nursing theory and counseling theory in order to guide practice in psychotherapy. The selection of these theories should be based on evidence-based literature and should align with the goals and objectives of the practicum experience. In this Practicum Journal entry, I will discuss the nursing theory and counseling theory that I have chosen, explain the reasons for my selection, and outline three goals and three objectives for my practicum experience. Furthermore, I will create a timeline of practicum activities based on the requirements of my practicum.

For this assignment, I have selected Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing and Carl Rogers’ Person-Centered Therapy as the nursing theory and counseling theory, respectively, to guide my practice in psychotherapy. Peplau’s theory focuses on the nurse-client relationship and the importance of interpersonal interactions in the healing process. This theory emphasizes the role of the nurse as a therapeutic partner who collaborates with the client in order to achieve optimal health outcomes. The person-centered therapy developed by Carl Rogers is a humanistic approach that emphasizes the therapist’s unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness in creating a supportive therapeutic environment. This theory emphasizes the client’s self-actualization and personal growth through self-exploration.

I have selected these theories because they align with my personal and professional values and beliefs about nursing and counseling. Both theories recognize the importance of the therapeutic relationship in facilitating healing and growth. Additionally, they prioritize client empowerment and autonomy, which are fundamental principles that I believe should guide practice in psychotherapy. By utilizing these theories, I aim to promote a client-centered approach that acknowledges and respects the unique experiences, values, and goals of each individual.

The selection of these theories is supported by evidence-based literature. Several studies have shown the effectiveness of Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing in various clinical settings. Lego (1998) applied Peplau’s theory to group psychotherapy and found that it enhanced the therapeutic relationship and facilitated the achievement of treatment goals. Khawaja, Pollock, and Westermeyer (2011) discussed the diminishing role of psychiatry in group psychotherapy and recommended the utilization of nursing theories, including Peplau’s theory, to enhance the effectiveness of group therapy interventions. Moreover, there is a substantial body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of Carl Rogers’ Person-Centered Therapy in diverse clinical populations. Nichols (2014) highlighted the relevance of person-centered therapy in family therapy and emphasized its positive impact on client outcomes. Koukourikos and Pasmatzi (2014) conducted a study on group therapy in psychotic inpatients and found that person-centered therapy improved patients’ social functioning and reduced symptom severity.

Based on the goals and objectives of this course’s practicum experience, I have developed three goals. Firstly, I aim to enhance my therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills in order to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with clients. This goal aligns with the core principles of Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing and Rogers’ Person-Centered Therapy, which emphasize the importance of the therapeutic relationship. Secondly, I strive to apply evidence-based interventions and techniques in order to address clients’ mental health needs and promote their well-being. This goal reflects my commitment to utilizing evidence-based practice in accordance with the principles of advanced practice nursing. Lastly, I aim to expand my knowledge and understanding of various psychotherapeutic approaches and their applicability to diverse client populations. This goal aligns with my desire to enhance my professional competence and stay abreast of current research and best practices in psychotherapy.

In order to achieve these goals, I have developed three objectives for my practicum experience. Firstly, I will engage in regular self-reflection and self-assessment to identify areas for growth and improvement in my therapeutic skills. This objective is vital for personal and professional development and will be accomplished through journaling, feedback from preceptors, and seeking consultation when needed. Secondly, I will actively participate in individual and group supervision sessions in order to receive guidance, support, and feedback from experienced practitioners. These supervision sessions will provide opportunities to discuss challenging cases, receive feedback on my interventions, and ensure adherence to ethical guidelines. Lastly, I will engage in ongoing professional development by attending relevant workshops, seminars, and conferences, and by keeping up-to-date with current literature in the field of psychotherapy.

Based on my practicum requirements, I have created a timeline of practicum activities. These activities include attending orientation sessions, familiarizing myself with the organization’s policies and procedures, observing therapy sessions, participating in supervision sessions, conducting assessments and screenings, developing treatment plans, implementing interventions, documenting client progress, and collaborating with interdisciplinary team members.

In conclusion, the selection of nursing theory and counseling theory is essential for guiding practice in psychotherapy. Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing and Rogers’ Person-Centered Therapy have been chosen for this practicum experience based on their alignment with personal and professional values, as well as their proven effectiveness in clinical settings. The goals and objectives for this practicum experience aim to enhance therapeutic communication skills, apply evidence-based interventions, and expand knowledge of various psychotherapeutic approaches. The timeline of practicum activities is based on the requirements of the practicum. By utilizing these theories, setting clear goals and objectives, and following a well-structured timeline, I will enhance my professional competence and provide high-quality psychotherapy services to clients.
