The IPEC competencies include: Communication; Teamwork; Assessment/Analysis; Implementation/Evaluation; Evaluation/Adaptation. These competencies can be applied to any type of interprofessional team, but they’re especially useful when it comes time to form an interprofessional team and collaborate with other advanced registered nurse roles in support of organizational initiatives or improved patient outcomes.

To form an interprofessional team, one must first understand their role within it. For example, as a nurse practitioner, I have a specific skill set that includes diagnosing illness and prescribing treatment plans for patients; however, this does not mean that I should be performing every single task on my own—it means that my role is to take charge during certain situations where a patient may need more specialized attention (e.g., if they have been diagnosed with an immune disorder).

This philosophy is not only beneficial for the students who learn through this process but also beneficial for organizations because they can better meet the needs of patients when an interprofessional team is created.

In my experience, I have seen how forming strong relationships between nurses and doctors can benefit patient outcomes. For example, there was a time when I worked with a doctor who was having trouble managing his diabetes. He had missed several appointments with his primary care doctor and was at risk for developing diabetic complications such as blindness or amputation. The nurses were able to work together with the doctor to provide him with regular check-ins and help him manage his diabetes by setting up a schedule where he could receive care from both a nurse and physician during each visit. This allowed us to collaborate on treatment plans for him so that he could keep his blood glucose levels under control while also getting regular check-ins from both professions in order

I have worked alongside pharmacists and physicians to help patients manage their medications in a way that will cause the least amount of harm to them. I have also worked with social workers and psychologists to create a holistic plan for my patients that includes not only medical treatment but also psychosocial support.

For example, one of my patients had been diagnosed with diabetes and was struggling with controlling his blood sugar levels. His doctor prescribed him medication but he was having trouble taking it as directed. We discussed how he was feeling about taking the medication, what he thought might be causing him not to take it correctly, and what might help him feel more comfortable taking the medication as prescribed by his doctor (e.g., reminders from family members). As a result of our conversation, we were able to develop a plan for him that included reminders from both myself and his family members about when he needed to take his medication so that he could meet his goals for managing his diabetes properly
