R is a statistical computing and graphics language and environment. It is a GNU project that is similar to the S language and environment developed by John Chambers and colleagues at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies). R can be thought of as an alternative implementation of S. There are some significant differences, but much of the code written for S runs unchanged in R.
