The professional practice issue that I plan to pursue as part of my doctoral studies is the mental health support and care for war veterans, specifically those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental disabilities. This is a significant issue as there is a growing number of veterans who are experiencing mental health problems due to their experiences in war. It is essential to address these issues as they can have severe impacts on the well-being and quality of life of these individuals.

To accomplish this project and make a change in nursing practice, my plan is to establish a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mental health services and support to war veterans in our communities. This organization will aim to increase access to mental health services, provide information and resources, develop new interventions, and create personalized care plans for veterans who cannot afford or do not have access to healthcare. This would not only help address the immediate mental health needs of war veterans but also work towards reducing the stigma associated with seeking help and promote long-term recovery.

In terms of the project proposal, the first step would be to identify the population and problem. The population would be war veterans, particularly those suffering from PTSD and other mental disabilities. The problem would be the lack of accessible and affordable mental health services for these individuals.

The proposed intervention would be the establishment of the non-profit organization, which would provide a wide range of mental health services such as therapy, counseling, support groups, and outreach programs. This organization would also collaborate with existing healthcare providers and community organizations to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for veterans.

The comparison for this project would be between the standard care currently available for veterans and the proposed intervention of the non-profit organization. The standard care often falls short in terms of accessibility, affordability, and comprehensiveness, whereas the non-profit organization would strive to overcome these barriers and provide tailored and holistic care.

The expected outcome of this project would be an improvement in the mental health outcomes of war veterans, including a reduction in symptoms of PTSD, improved coping mechanisms, and enhanced overall well-being. Additionally, it would contribute to a decrease in the rate of veteran suicides and homelessness.

To conduct the study, the proposed site would be South Florida, specifically the Miami area. This region has a significant population of war veterans and provides a diverse range of resources and support systems that can be leveraged to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the non-profit organization.

One of the AACN DNP Essentials that I anticipate finding challenging during the implementation of this project is Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving Health. This essential focuses on the development and implementation of strategies to promote health, prevent diseases, and improve the health of individuals, families, and communities.

Overcoming this challenge would require collaboration with other healthcare professionals, community organizations, and government agencies to develop comprehensive prevention strategies that can address the unique mental health needs of war veterans. It would involve conducting research, analyzing data, and staying updated with current evidence-based practices in clinical prevention and population health.

In conclusion, my professional practice issue for my doctoral studies is the mental health support and care for war veterans suffering from PTSD and other mental disabilities. By establishing a non-profit organization dedicated to this cause, I aim to increase access to mental health services, provide information and resources, develop new interventions, and create personalized care plans for veterans in need. The expected outcome is to improve the mental health outcomes of war veterans and contribute to a decrease in rates of suicide and homelessness. The implementation of this project may pose challenges in meeting the AACN DNP Essential VII, but through collaboration and staying current with evidence-based practices, these challenges can be overcome.
