Explain the difference between psychological dependence and physical dependence

Explain the difference between psychological dependence and physical dependence

answer

The difference between physical and psychological dependence is physical dependency affects
one’s body and psychological dependency affects one’s behavior. However, addiction affects
both one’s mind and one’s body.
Physical Dependency is marked by the withdrawal symptoms, such as mood swings, vomiting,
cramping, sweating, violent behavior, or worse. The withdrawal symptoms can leave one
physically ill. For example-“ Those who take opiates over a long period will build up a
tolerance to the drug. Receptors in the brain become less sensitive, needing a higher dose to
get the same effect, The body becomes unable to produce natural opiates to satisfy the tolerant
receptors, naturally, the body becomes dependant on the drug” (“JourneyPure – Florida Drug
and Alcohol Rehab,” 2019)
Psychological Dependency is the dependency of the drug of choice. Psychological
Dependency affects the way that one behaves. Example- not being able to stop using, abusing
the substance even if there are health problems at risk, and using narcotics to cope with life’s
problems. Long time use can manifest into obsession meaning all that matters is finding the
substance and getting high. (“Sana Lake Recovery Center – Missouri’s #1 Addiction Treatment
Program,” 2019)
