HCA 255 Topic 6 DQ 1

Many communist or socialist countries have a department that addresses public health as well as the health care of their citizens. Research one of these programs and compare it to programs in countries that do not follow communism or socialism. Discuss the upsides and downsides to each program.

Answer:

The United States has no such department, but it does have a number of programs that address public health. For example, there is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which works to prevent disease and promote health around the world. The CDC’s mission is “to provide national leadership through research, education, and service in response to public health threats” (https://www.cdc.gov/about/organization/mission.htm). It focuses on four major areas: epidemiology and laboratory capacity; prevention (including vaccination); preparedness (including disaster response); and communication with the public about health threats.

The CDC also has had some controversies over its handling of outbreaks of disease like Ebola and Zika virus; however, overall it seems to be doing a good job at fulfilling its mission statement.

In contrast, many communist or socialist countries have a department that addresses public health as well as the health care of their citizens
