In the next 3-5 years, I think that advanced registered nurses will continue to play a major role in health care by influencing the direction of health care.

I believe that advanced registered nurses leaders will help drive the shift to value-based health care and its impact on the roles and responsibilities of advanced registered nurses. The shift to value-based health care is an important one because it focuses on measuring outcomes rather than just spending money on procedures. For example, if you need a knee replacement surgery, but your doctor can only do it using a high-end prosthetic knee, then he/she may not want to perform the surgery if he/she knows that you will be unable to afford it. The doctor would rather save his/her money for someone who could afford the procedure. In this case, there would be no benefit for either party involved because neither person got what they needed from their relationship with each other.

In order for us all to make sure we’re getting what we need from our relationships with each other, we need better communication about what outcomes are important for each party involved in any given situation or scenario.”

Health care policy is undergoing a major change from the traditional fee-for-service model to a value-based system. As technology continues to evolve, I’ll have to find ways to incorporate new tools into my practice without sacrificing quality or efficiency. I’m excited about these challenges because they’ve always been my favorite part about being an advanced registered nurse leader: figuring out how we can use new tools and technologies in our day-to-day work without sacrificing the quality or efficiency that makes us who we are as professionals.

The most important thing for me as an advanced registered nurse is that our patients understand what they need to do in order to stay healthy—and we can’t do that if they don’t understand what they’re dealing with!
