Richard Lazarus, in his concept of cognitive appraisal, defines stress as a two-way process (Ben-Zur, 2019). According to his explanation, the existence of stress is properly manifested through the existence of stressors, which often includes external factors from the environment that are involved with the production of stressors. The second process is an individual’s reception mechanism and response to the subjected stressors. According to the cognitive appraisal theory by Richard Lazarus, two factors which were huge contributors to the response to stress included; the threatening tendency of the stress to an individual and the consideration of resources required to eradicate the stressor and the resultative stress it produces (Ben-Zur, 2019).Stress and Coping

Concerning the scenario on a friend losing a job, it is justifiable to term the event of losing the job as a stressful event. This is because the job was meant to serve the purpose of paying for his tuition and other basic needs, hence qualifying to be a stressful event. The primary appraisal would constitute the magnitude of the stressful event in the future or current state of my friend and, therefore, would involve the consideration of questions like; Is this stressor good, bad or necessary for future progress (Levenson, 2019). In this scenario where my friend lost the job, it is, therefore, considerable to categorize the stressful event as a threat as nothing good can come out of it at his position. The stressful event can be categorized as a threat under primary appraisal because it makes the success of a dependent event ambiguous and challenging. My friend in this particular scenario is threatened as they do not have the supplementary income to pay for their tuition and, therefore, should come up with necessary interventions to curb the existing threat.Stress and Coping

Secondary appraisal ensues after the primary appraisal and often involves the individual, in this case, my friend, facing the challenge and expressing feelings related to the stressors and the stress it produces. In this scenario, my friend should develop a, I will look for another job to pay for my tuition, mentality. By doing this, they will work hard towards fighting the stressful event and eventually win. This process of fighting a stressful event after a successful secondary appraisal is what is referred to as a stress response.Stress and Coping

People encounter a number of different sources of stress throughout their lives. These sources may include work, relationships, and other seemingly innocuous life events. Interestingly, what one person considers stressful may be what another person considers energizing. Everyone responds differently in both degree and magnitude to both positive and negative life events. You may be familiar with stories about how extreme responses to stress can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, some studies show that everyday life choices and conflicts, which contribute to stress, may have a more significant impact than major life events. In this discussion, you will have the opportunity to discuss stress and coping as they relate to a scenario.
Objectives:
Discuss potential sources of stress.
Design strategies for managing stress and maintaining health.

Step 1: Respond to the following prompt:
Imagine that a friend has just lost his job, which was helping him to cover tuition costs. Apply Lazarus and Folkman's cognitive theory of stress and describe his potential reactions to this job loss. In your answer, be sure to describe the following: Stressful Event, Primary Appraisal, Secondary Appraisal, and Stress Response.
